Saudi Gulf News:
The Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port project on Bubiyan Island in northern Kuwait is gaining momentum as both China and Kuwait ramp up efforts to move the strategic venture into a more advanced phase.
Chinese Vice Minister of Transport Fu Xueyin, accompanied by a high-level delegation, recently visited the port site. Their tour was facilitated by Kuwaiti Minister of Public Works Noura Al-Mashaan and Assistant Foreign Minister for Asian Affairs Ambassador Samih Hayat. The visit marked a significant step forward in realizing the agreements reached during the official visit of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to China in September 2023.
During a press conference held on the occasion of World Chinese Language Day, Chinese Ambassador to Kuwait Zhang Jianwei emphasized that the Ministry of Transport and Communications in China has been entrusted with executing the signed memoranda of understanding regarding the Mubarak Port initiative.
Calling the port a "monumental and strategic undertaking," Jianwei noted that it symbolizes the growing depth of Chinese-Kuwaiti collaboration. "Accelerating progress on this key infrastructure project is a shared goal," he affirmed, adding that Vice Minister Fu's visit signals strong commitment and support from the Chinese government.
The ambassador also confirmed that marine survey operations at the site have already begun, undertaken by a Chinese firm that has officially entered the port zone. This progress was described as a direct outcome of intensified bilateral coordination.
"Both sides have agreed to speed up the pace of implementation," Jianwei reiterated. “Through close coordination, we are optimistic that this large-scale project will advance steadily through its planned phases and be completed to the satisfaction of both nations.”
Kuwaiti Minister Noura Al-Mashaan also met with the Chinese delegation to ensure all operational and logistical aspects are streamlined, helping the project move forward without delay.
When asked about the project's timeline, Jianwei acknowledged the port’s vast scale, explaining that its realization will naturally span several stages over an extended period. Nevertheless, he expressed confidence that enhanced cooperation will ensure its timely and successful completion.
Beyond the port project, Ambassador Jianwei reflected on the broader relationship between China and Kuwait, calling it stronger than ever. He praised the multiple achievements that have resulted from close diplomatic and economic cooperation, and expressed great optimism about future joint ventures.
Touching upon global trade dynamics, Jianwei criticized the disruptive effects of U.S. tariffs and trade policies initiated under U.S. President Donald Trump. He described these actions as destabilizing to the global economy and contradictory to the principles of free trade.
“The Chinese side does not seek conflict or escalation,” Jianwei stated. “However, we are prepared to defend our interests. If the United States wishes to return to the negotiating table, China welcomes that. But if a trade war continues, we are ready as well.”
As the Mubarak Al-Kabeer Port project progresses, it stands as a testament to the growing synergy between Kuwait and China — a partnership rooted in shared vision, strategic interests, and mutual respect.
