Doosan Enerbility to Lead $100 Million Fuel Conversion Project at Yanbu 2 Power Plant in Saudi Arabia

Doosan Enerbility has announced a major contract win with Saudi Arabia’s state-run utility company, the Power and Water Utility Company for Jubail and Yanbu (Marafiq), for a transformative fuel conversion project at the Yanbu 2 power plant.

Valued at $100 million, the project aims to convert the existing oil-fired power plant into a cleaner, more efficient gas-fired facility. This transition represents a significant step toward reducing the environmental footprint of one of Saudi Arabia’s key power generation assets. Doosan Enerbility will supply essential equipment for the upgrade, including advanced combustion systems and Distributed Control Systems (DCS), while also overseeing the full commissioning process. The project is expected to be completed by 2028.

Sustaining Power with Fewer Emissions

Once the conversion is complete, the Yanbu 2 plant will retain its current generation capacity of 1,375 megawatts. However, the environmental impact will be notably reduced, with carbon emissions expected to drop by around 25%. This aligns with Saudi Arabia’s broader goals of transitioning to cleaner energy sources and enhancing sustainability in its industrial sectors.

Located within the Yanbu Industrial Complex—about 350 kilometers north of Jeddah—Yanbu 2 was originally brought online in 2013 to power the surrounding industrial zone. At the time, Doosan Enerbility was also involved in delivering key systems, including boilers and steam turbines.

Efficient and Low-Carbon Energy Solution

Son Seung-woo, Head of Power Services Business Group at Doosan Enerbility, emphasized the efficiency and practicality of this approach:
“Converting the Yanbu 2 power plant to natural gas is a cost-effective way to lower emissions. By leveraging the existing infrastructure, we can make a meaningful environmental impact while minimizing disruptions in operations.”

He added, “We are fully committed to delivering the project on time and to the highest quality standards, ensuring that Marafiq and the Yanbu Industrial Complex continue to benefit from a stable and reliable power supply.”

Looking Ahead: A Growing Market for Fuel Conversion

Saudi Arabia is expected to issue approximately 1.4 GW worth of fuel conversion projects each year through 2027, signaling strong momentum in the transition to lower-emission power generation. Doosan Enerbility is positioning itself as a key player in this evolving energy landscape—not only in Saudi Arabia, but globally.

In addition to its work in the Kingdom, Doosan is actively engaged in similar fuel conversion initiatives in countries such as Chile and Vietnam, further strengthening its role in advancing global sustainable energy solutions.
