Qatar has taken a major leap forward in its renewable energy journey with the official launch of two large-scale solar power plants—Ras Laffan and Mesaieed—adding a combined capacity of 875 megawatts (MW) to the nation’s clean energy portfolio.
The inauguration ceremony, held in Ras Laffan Industrial City, was led by His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Amir of the State of Qatar. The event was also attended by His Excellency Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and President and CEO of QatarEnergy, along with senior leaders and stakeholders from Qatar’s energy sector.
With the launch of these two new plants, Qatar’s total solar power capacity now stands at 1,675 MW—more than double what it was previously. This milestone aligns with the goals set in Qatar National Vision 2030, specifically the fourth pillar, which emphasizes environmental stewardship while promoting sustainable economic and social development.
A Major Step Toward Sustainability
H.E. Minister Al-Kaabi emphasized the strategic importance of these projects in his address during the ceremony. He described the Ras Laffan and Mesaieed plants as vital to the country’s mission to reduce carbon emissions, enhance sustainability, and diversify energy sources. Combined, the new solar facilities are expected to slash CO₂ emissions by approximately 4.7 million tons annually.
“These solar projects are central to our efforts to provide cleaner energy and reduce our reliance on fossil fuels,” Al-Kaabi said. “They will play a significant role in meeting our electricity needs, currently covering about 15% of peak demand. With the future addition of the 2,000 MW Dukhan solar power plant, that figure is expected to rise to 30% by 2029.”
National Expertise Leading the Way
Al-Kaabi proudly highlighted that Qatar is now leveraging its own talent and resources to build and operate solar energy projects, marking a shift from previously relying on international expertise. “We are extremely proud of our national professionals who are leading these initiatives. Their achievements are a testament to Qatar’s growing capability in renewable energy.”
Looking Ahead
The two new plants will work in tandem with the existing Al-Kharsaah solar facility to ensure a more sustainable and resilient energy mix for Qatar. These efforts are part of QatarEnergy’s Sustainability Strategy, which aims to deliver over 4,000 MW of renewable energy capacity by 2030.
In closing, Minister Al-Kaabi extended his appreciation to the teams involved in delivering the projects, acknowledging their dedication and professionalism. He also expressed his deep gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani for his continued leadership and support, which he said has been crucial to the success of Qatar’s energy sector transformation.
