OPAZ and OQ Alternative Energy Join Forces to Launch Energy Excellence Programe in Oman

The Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ) in Oman has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation (MoC) with OQ Alternative Energy (OQAE) to roll out an Energy Excellence Programe aimed at boosting energy efficiency and supporting the country’s net-zero carbon goals.

OPAZ and OQ Alternative Energy Join Forces to Launch Energy Excellence Programe in Oman

This strategic partnership is a step forward in Oman’s journey towards sustainability and environmental stewardship. The Energy Excellence Programe is designed to reduce carbon emissions across economic zones, free zones, and industrial cities, aligning closely with the Sultanate’s national strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

Under this memorandum, both parties will explore opportunities for collaboration in implementing energy efficiency initiatives and securing related certifications. The agreement outlines several key areas of cooperation, including:

  • Providing support and consultancy for energy efficiency assessments

  • Decarbonising technical and non-technical assets managed by OPAZ

  • Identifying and executing energy-saving projects through performance contracting (upon mutual agreement)

  • Assisting OPAZ in obtaining ISO 50001 certification in energy management

  • Developing a comprehensive energy strategy tailored to OPAZ’s operations

Driving Sustainable Development

Eng. Mazin Mansour Al Balushi, Head of the Technical Studies Section at OPAZ, highlighted the Authority’s commitment to environmental conservation and emission reduction in all zones and cities under its jurisdiction. He stated that launching the Energy Excellence Programe is a reflection of these priorities and is aligned with Oman Vision 2040—specifically the environmental and natural resources pillar.

Al Balushi emphasized that OPAZ has consistently prioritized sustainability in recent years. The Authority has already signed several agreements and MoCs to advance green projects such as green hydrogen, green ammonia, green steel, and direct reduced iron. These efforts underline its unwavering dedication to promoting a greener and more sustainable industrial future for Oman.

A Positive Step for Innovation and Human Capital

The Energy Excellence Programe is expected to not only enhance the efficient use of energy but also drive innovation and contribute to the development of human capital across the economic and industrial zones. By optimizing energy consumption, the initiative will create long-term environmental and economic benefits.

Through this collaboration with OQAE, OPAZ aims to establish a new benchmark in sustainable energy practices within Oman’s special economic zones and free zones. The partnership marks a significant milestone in building a resilient and eco-friendly industrial ecosystem that supports the nation’s broader sustainability objectives.
