Nebras Energy Expands Footprint in Oman with Two Major CCGT Power Projects

Nebras Energy, formerly known as Qatar Electricity & Water Company, has achieved a significant milestone in its regional expansion strategy by securing two long-term natural gas–fired combined-cycle gas turbine (CCGT) power plant projects in the Sultanate of Oman. The projects — Misfah Power Plant and Duqm Power Plant — will play a critical role in strengthening Oman’s electricity infrastructure over the next two decades.

Strategic Importance for Oman’s Power Sector

1. Meeting Rapidly Growing Electricity Demand

Oman’s electricity demand continues to rise due to:

  • Industrial expansion
  • Urban population growth
  • Large-scale developments such as Duqm Special Economic Zone

The Misfah and Duqm plants will provide baseload power, ensuring grid stability and supply reliability.

2. Supporting Duqm as an Industrial Hub

The Duqm Power Plant is particularly strategic, supporting:

  • Heavy industries
  • Petrochemical complexes
  • Ports and logistics infrastructure

Reliable power supply is essential to attract long-term industrial investments to Duqm.

3. Cleaner and More Efficient Power Generation

CCGT plants are among the most efficient fossil-fuel power technologies, offering:

  • Lower fuel consumption per MWh
  • Reduced carbon emissions compared to conventional gas plants
  • Faster ramp-up capability to balance renewable energy sources

Impact on Oman’s Economy and Workforce

Economic Impact

  • Long-term private sector investment in national infrastructure
  • Reduced reliance on older, less efficient power assets
  • Enhanced investor confidence in Oman’s energy market

Employment & Skills Development

  • Hundreds of jobs during construction
  • Long-term technical and operational roles
  • Skills transfer to Omani engineers and technicians

Local partner Bahwan Infrastructure Services further strengthens in-country value creation.

Nebras Energy’s Regional Growth Strategy

According to H.E. Eng. Saad bin Sherida Al-Kaabi, Minister of State for Energy Affairs and Chairman of Nebras Energy, the projects reflect the company’s commitment to supporting regional development and energy security.

Meanwhile, Eng. Mohammed bin Nasser Al-Hajri, Managing Director and CEO, highlighted that these projects represent a qualitative leap in Nebras Energy’s portfolio, reinforcing its strategy to:

  • Diversify geographically
  • Invest in high-efficiency power assets
  • Strengthen long-term revenue stability

Deep Analysis: Why These Projects Matter

From a strategic standpoint, these projects offer win-win outcomes:

  • For Oman: Energy security, industrial growth, and job creation
  • For Nebras Energy: Stable long-term returns and expanded GCC presence
  • For the Region: Cross-border energy collaboration and shared expertise

The long-term PPAs with Nama significantly reduce market risk, making these assets financially resilient even amid global energy market volatility.

Conclusion

The Misfah and Duqm CCGT power projects mark a transformational step for Oman’s power generation landscape and a major regional expansion for Nebras Energy. With modern technology, strong consortium partners, and long-term offtake agreements, these projects are well-positioned to deliver reliable, efficient, and economically viable electricity for decades.

As Oman accelerates its industrial and infrastructure development, projects of this scale will be central to sustaining growth, enhancing grid resilience, and supporting national energy objectives.
